Every table has one board that does the honors. Cut by hand from a single piece of olive wood into a clean rectangle, this is the one that comes out when there is something worth gathering around.

Charcuterie built out across the large, a half baguette and good butter on the medium, a grazing board for two on the small. And they are proper cutting boards too, sturdy under the knife for onions, herbs, whatever the meal needs, naturally antibacterial, with straight sides that keep even a quick spread looking tidy.

Between meals the sizes stack neatly on the counter, each layer of grain different from the one beneath. Olive wood deepens with every year of use, the rare board that grows more beautiful the longer it serves. The one guests assume has been in the family for years, until it has been.
