The Evening In

Story:

Once the plates are cleared, nobody is in a hurry to leave. People drift to the sofa, someone opens another bottle, and the lamps go down a little. This bundle brings together four pieces for that part of the night, when the table is done but the evening is not.

The round mango wood tray sets down on the coffee table and holds it all, carried from the counter to the sofa in a single trip. On it, the brass pitcher pours iced water or a batched cocktail, the alabaster tealight holders glow soft through their pale veining, and the bottle openers, one warm gold and one soft pewter, lift the caps from a few cold beverages.

Unlit and unused, they still look right sitting there the next morning. The mango wood deepens with each passing year, and the pitcher, holders and openers are the pieces still out a decade on. In time it becomes simply how the room looks whenever friends stay late.

Tealight candles are included.
